The supplement problem
The supplement industry has a credibility problem. Walk into any health store or scroll through any fitness influencer's page and you will be bombarded with products promising muscle growth, fat loss, energy and recovery. Most are underdosed, overhyped and backed by marketing budgets and paid testimonials.
The result: most gym members fall into one of two camps. They waste money on products that do nothing, or they dismiss supplements entirely and miss the handful that genuinely work.
The short answer: creatine monohydrate and protein powder are the two supplements with the strongest evidence for most gym-goers, a properly dosed pre-workout is worth it for some, and almost everything else depends on context or belongs in the skip pile.
This guide unpacks that answer. It is for people who want to know what the science supports, what dosing matters, and why the way a supplement is formulated determines whether it is worth your money or destined for the back of a cupboard.
The supplements worth taking
What works. Supplements with robust, replicated evidence.
Creatine monohydrate
If you could only take one supplement for the rest of your life, creatine monohydrate would be the correct choice. The single most studied sports supplement in existence, with over 500 peer-reviewed studies supporting its efficacy.
What it does: creatine increases your muscles' stores of phosphocreatine, which is used to regenerate ATP during high-intensity efforts. In practical terms: more reps, more power output, faster recovery between sets. Over time, greater strength gains and muscle growth.
Beyond performance: emerging research shows creatine supports cognitive function, particularly under sleep deprivation or mental fatigue. There is growing interest in neuroprotective properties and a role in healthy ageing.
Dosing: 3 to 5 grams daily, every day. Loading phases (20g/day for 5 to 7 days) saturate stores faster but are not necessary. Consistent daily intake achieves the same result within 3 to 4 weeks.
What to look for: the source matters. Creapure, manufactured in Germany by AlzChem, is the gold standard for creatine monohydrate. Produced via chemical synthesis (not from animal byproducts), HPLC-verified for purity, tested for contaminants. Cheap creatine from unverified sources may contain impurities including creatinine, dihydrotriazine and dicyandiamide.
Inception Labs Creatine Monohydrate uses Creapure exclusively. Vegan, banned-substance tested, transparently dosed. Available at member pricing at the on-site store.
Protein powder
Protein powder is not magic. It is food in a convenient form. The value is making it easier to hit your daily protein target, particularly when time, appetite or lifestyle make whole-food protein harder.
Why protein matters: muscle protein synthesis requires adequate dietary protein. For people who train regularly, the evidence supports 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For an 80kg person, 128 to 176 grams daily.
Whey protein is the most studied and effective form for muscle protein synthesis due to its high leucine content and rapid absorption. Whey isolate has higher protein per serve with less lactose and fat than whey concentrate.
Inception Labs Collagen Whey Protein combines whey isolate with bovine collagen peptides. The dual-action formula addresses muscle recovery (whey) and joint health and connective tissue (collagen). Available at member pricing.
Pre-workout
Pre-workout supplements are where the industry is at its worst. Many products rely on excessive caffeine, artificial colours and proprietary blends that hide the actual doses of active ingredients. You feel a tingle from beta-alanine, a rush from caffeine, and assume the product is "working." In reality, many pre-workouts are expensive caffeine pills with fairy dust.
What matters in a pre-workout:
- Caffeine (200 to 400mg): improves alertness, reduces perceived exertion, enhances power output. Dose should be clearly stated, not hidden in a blend.
- L-citrulline (6 to 8g): increases nitric oxide production, improving blood flow and exercise performance. Many products use citrulline malate at inadequate doses.
- Alpha GPC (300 to 600mg): a nootropic that supports focus and mind-muscle connection. The difference between a performance pre-workout and a stimulant bomb.
- Beta-alanine (3.2g): buffers hydrogen ions in muscle tissue, delaying the burning sensation. The tingling is a side effect, not an indicator of quality.
Inception Labs Valor Pre-Workout is built around these ingredients at clinical doses. 350mg caffeine alongside Alpha GPC for nootropic-driven focus. Every ingredient and dose is listed on the label. No proprietary blends.
Conditional supplements
These have evidence supporting use in specific contexts but are not universally necessary.
Fat burners (thermogenics)
Most fat burners are glorified caffeine pills with marginal additional ingredients. Well-formulated thermogenics can provide a modest boost to metabolic rate and energy expenditure, particularly when combined with a structured training and nutrition programme.
Dosing and formulation matter. A fat burner that relies solely on stimulants spikes energy and crashes it. One that combines thermogenic compounds with nootropics for sustained focus is a more useful tool for people in a calorie deficit who need mental clarity to maintain training intensity.
Inception Labs 1510 Fat Incinerator takes the nootropic-plus-thermogenic approach. Designed to activate brown adipose tissue, support metabolic rate and maintain focus without the jitter-crash cycle of stimulant-heavy alternatives. Available at member pricing.
Natural testosterone support
For men over 30, natural testosterone levels begin a gradual decline. A normal process, but it can show as reduced recovery, lower energy, decreased motivation and difficulty maintaining lean muscle.
Natural testosterone support supplements are not hormone replacement. They work by supporting the body's own production pathways through ingredients like ashwagandha, fenugreek and D-aspartic acid. The evidence is modest but positive for well-formulated products.
Inception Labs Transcend Test Booster is formulated for men seeking natural support for strength, recovery, mood and lean muscle maintenance. Available at member pricing.
Body composition optimisation
For those focused on shifting body composition, combining resistance training with targeted supplementation can accelerate results. SERM (selective oestrogen receptor modulator) technology represents an advanced approach to simultaneously supporting lean muscle gain and fat reduction.
Inception Labs Ichor is a dual-action lean muscle builder and fat burner using a two-ingredient formula at clinical dosing. The most specialised product in the Inception Labs range.
Supplements you can skip
BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids): if you are eating adequate protein, BCAAs offer no additional benefit. They are already present in whey protein and whole food sources. Paying twice for the same amino acids.
Mass gainers: protein powder with added sugar and maltodextrin. Achieve the same result by eating more food. Not harmful, but expensive and nutritionally poor.
Glutamine for muscle growth: glutamine has roles in immune function and gut health, but the evidence for additional muscle-building benefit in well-fed individuals is weak.
Testosterone boosters based solely on tribulus terrestris: decades of marketing, but tribulus has consistently failed to demonstrate testosterone-boosting effects in human studies.
Why formulation matters more than brand
Clinical dosing
An ingredient that works at 5 grams does nothing at 500 milligrams. Many supplement companies include effective ingredients at sub-clinical doses so they can list them on the label without paying to include enough to produce an effect. "Fairy dusting" is endemic in the industry.
Every Inception Labs product uses clinical doses. Full doses are printed on the label. No proprietary blends.
Ingredient sourcing
Where an ingredient comes from determines its purity, potency and safety. Creapure creatine from Germany is not the same as generic creatine from an unverified supplier.
Transparency
If a supplement company will not tell you what is in their product and at what dose, that tells you what you need to know.

Building your supplement stack
If you are new to supplements, start simple and build over time.
Stage 1: the foundation (everyone)
- Creatine monohydrate: 3 to 5g daily
- Protein powder: 1 to 2 serves daily as needed to hit protein targets
These two have the strongest evidence base and the broadest applicability. Start here for at least three months before adding anything else.
Stage 2: performance enhancement
- Pre-workout: on training days, 20 to 30 minutes before your session
- Add this when you have established consistent training habits
Stage 3: goal-specific
- Fat burner / thermogenic: during a structured fat loss phase, combined with a calorie deficit
- Testosterone support: for men over 30 noticing recovery or energy changes
- Body composition optimiser: for those with specific lean mass and body fat goals
At every stage
Pair supplementation with proper nutrition. Supplements fill gaps and optimise outcomes; they do not replace food.
