Taking the unknowns out
Your first day at a new gym comes with a lot of unknowns. Where do you park. What happens when you walk in. Do you need to bring anything. Will someone show you around, or are you on your own.
The short version: park free at Tower Junction (3,000+ car parks), check in at reception during staffed hours, get a tour of the 800sqm training floor, a free body composition scan, and, if you have joined on a 12 or 24-month plan, a free consultation with a trainer or nutrition coach. Then you train.
This guide walks through every step of that first visit, from leaving the house to heading home after your first session. No surprises, no guesswork.
Before you arrive
What to bring
Keep it simple:
- Comfortable training clothes. Anything you can move freely in. No dress code beyond closed-toe shoes on the training floor.
- A water bottle. Water is available at the facility, but bringing your own is convenient.
- Your phone. You'll need it for the GymMaster app, which is your access key and membership management tool.
- A towel (optional). Useful for wiping down equipment, though we keep cleaning stations throughout the facility.
You don't need to bring gloves, lifting belts, or any specialised gear. If you decide later you want those, great. On day one, just bring yourself and the basics.
Download the GymMaster app
If you're joining as a member, the GymMaster app is your gateway. It handles 24/7 access (the app opens the door), membership management, and session tracking. Download it before you arrive so the setup is faster at check-in.
If you're coming in for a free 24-hour trial, the team will get you set up when you arrive.
Getting there
Parking
Inception Gym is at Tower Junction, 65 Blenheim Road, Addington, Christchurch. Tower Junction is a major retail hub with 3,000+ free car parks. You won't struggle to find a spot, even during busy shopping hours. No meters, no time limits, no circling the block. Drive in, park near the gym entrance, walk in.
From the CBD, the drive is roughly 10 minutes depending on traffic. From Riccarton, 5 minutes. From most central Christchurch suburbs, 10 to 15 minutes max.
Finding the entrance
Inception Gym is clearly signed within Tower Junction. Once you've parked, the entrance is easy to find. Walk in and the reception area is right there.
Walking in
During staffed hours
Staffed hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 2pm, closed Sunday and public holidays. If you arrive during those times, a staff member will be at reception. That's the ideal window for a first visit because you get full support throughout.
Tell them you're new. Whether you're a new member, a free trial visitor, or just looking around, they'll take it from there. No hard sell. They'll show you the facility, answer your questions, and let the gym speak for itself.
Outside staffed hours
If you're already set up as a member with the GymMaster app, you can access the facility 24/7. The app controls door entry and the gym has full security and surveillance active at all hours. For a first visit, we recommend coming during staffed hours so you get the full orientation.
The facility tour
A staff member will walk you through the entire 800sqm training floor. Here's what you'll see.
The training floor
92 pieces of equipment, spanning 71 machine variants, spread across a purpose-built layout. Equipment is organised logically: plate-loaded machines, pin-loaded machines, free weights, dumbbells (up to 70kg), cable stations, and cardio. Each area is clearly defined and easy to navigate once you've seen the layout.
The floor is clean. The equipment is well-maintained. The lighting and atmosphere are built for focused training. You'll notice that immediately, and it's one of the reasons the 1,078+ Google reviews consistently mention facility quality.
For a complete breakdown of every piece of equipment by category, see the equipment page.
The supplement store
Inception Gym has an on-site Supplement Solutions store right inside the facility. It carries a full range of supplements including the Inception Labs line (our in-house brand built for clinical dosing). As a member, you save up to 40% on supplements year-round, and Inception Labs products come with an additional $20 member saving per product.
You don't need to buy anything on day one. It's there when you're ready. Staff can advise based on your goals and experience.
Changing areas and amenities
Clean, well-maintained changing rooms with showers. If you're training before or after work, you can change on-site without concerns about the facilities. Cleanliness is one of the things members mention most often in the gym's Google reviews, and the changing areas are held to the same standard as the training floor.
Your body composition scan
Every member gets free body composition scans. Not a sales gimmick. A genuine tool that gives you a detailed snapshot of where you are right now.
The scan measures:
- Body fat percentage across different regions
- Muscle mass distribution
- Visceral fat levels (fat around your organs, a key health marker)
- Hydration and other metrics
The scan takes a few minutes and is non-invasive. The results give you a baseline you can compare in 8 to 12 weeks to see measurable progress. Useful data for any trainer or nutrition coach working with you.
See the body composition scans guide for what the numbers mean and how to use them.
Your free consultation
If you've joined on a contract membership (12-month or 24-month), you get a free initial consultation with a personal trainer or nutrition coach. One of the most valuable parts of your first few days as a member.
What the consultation covers
The consultation is tailored to you. A trainer will discuss:
- Your training goals (strength, fat loss, general fitness, longevity, sport-specific)
- Your current experience (complete beginner to advanced)
- Any injuries, limitations, or health considerations
- A recommended training programme to get you started
- How to use the key equipment for your programme
- Training frequency and session structure
Not a 10-minute chat. A proper consultation designed to give you a clear, actionable plan for your first weeks. You leave with a programme, not just good intentions.
Nutrition support
For members who want structured nutrition guidance, Inception Nutrition runs PhD-led coaching that integrates with your body scan data and training programme. The approach goes well beyond generic meal plans. It's personalised, evidence-based, and built around your specific goals, body composition, and lifestyle. Many new members find that pairing a training plan with structured nutrition support speeds up early results.
Your first training session
With your orientation done and your programme in hand, it's time to train.
Start light
Your first session is about learning the movements, getting comfortable with the equipment, and setting a baseline. Not about going heavy or pushing to failure. Use weights that feel manageable. Focus on the movement pattern, not the load. There's plenty of time to increase intensity once you've built competence and confidence.
Use the machines first
If you're a complete beginner, pin-loaded machines are your best starting point. They guide your body through a fixed path, so the form is largely taken care of by the machine. Lower injury risk, and you can focus on learning how each muscle group feels when it's working.
As you build confidence and body awareness, you can bring in free weights, cables, and more complex movements.
Nobody is watching
Worth repeating: nobody on the training floor is paying attention to what you're doing. Everyone is focused on their own session. The culture is professional and respectful. You can learn, experiment, and find your rhythm without any sense of being observed or judged.
We wrote an entire post about the gym culture that makes first-timers feel at home if you want more on this.
Ask for help
If you're unsure about a machine, a movement, or anything else, ask. During staffed hours there's always someone available. No question is too basic. "How do I adjust this seat" and "Am I doing this right" are the most common questions we get, and they're exactly the right questions to ask.
After your first session
How you'll feel
Expect some muscle soreness 24 to 48 hours after your first session, particularly if you haven't trained before. That's delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and it's normal. Not a sign of injury. Your muscles adapting to new stimulus. It fades as your body adjusts over the first two to three weeks.
Stay hydrated, eat well, sleep. Those three factors have more impact on your recovery than any supplement or recovery gadget.
Planning your week
For beginners, three sessions per week is the sweet spot. Train on non-consecutive days (for example, Monday, Wednesday, Friday) to allow recovery between sessions. Your programme from the consultation will guide the structure. Follow it consistently for at least four weeks before making changes.
Book your next scan
Schedule a follow-up body composition scan for 8 to 12 weeks after your first one. Comparing the two scans gives you objective evidence of progress. One of the most motivating moments in a new member's first months: seeing the numbers move in the right direction because of work you've done.
